Lady Gyrenes Drop Straight Set Decision At Webber

BABSON PARK, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team fell in straight sets, 26-24, 25-21, 25-20, on Tuesday night at Webber. The Blue and Green drop to 13-11 on the season and to 1-7 against Sun Conference opponents.
 
Bre Holder led the Lady Gyrenes with 11 kills. Lexy Smith also finished in double-digit kills with 10. Lauren Ruby and Veronika Garcia led AMU in assists with 19 and 13, respectively.
 
In the first set, the Blue and Green raced out to a 7-1 lead to force the Warriors to call a timeout. Following the timeout, Webber chipped away at the AMU lead and eventually tied the Lady Gyrenes at 12-12. The teams went back-and-forth over the next several points before Webber took a 20-17 advantage late in the game. Trailing 24-21, AMU saved three set points before the Lady Warriors took the final two points of the game to take the set 26-24.
 
The Lady Gyrenes again built an early lead in the second game, taking 10 of the first 15 points the set. A few points later, Webber responded with a 14-4 run to take a 22-16 lead on Ave.  Webber went on to win the set 25-21.
 
The third set was back-and-forth from the beginning with neither team able to take more than a 2-3 point edge. In total, the third set featured nine ties with the last coming at 16-all. Tied at 16, Webber won the next four points to take a 20-16 lead before going on to win the set 25-20.
 
The Blue and Green are back in action on Friday and Saturday when they compete in four matches over two days at the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament hosted by Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
