FORT WAYNE, Ind. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on day one of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Invitational hosted by Indiana Tech. AMU fell to both Goshen and Indiana Tech in straight sets. Ave Maria moves to 13-13 overall.
 
The Lady Gyrenes conclude the two-day invitational on Saturday when they take on Indiana University East at 10 a.m. and Indiana University Southeast at 12:15 p.m. Live stats will be available for both games and the links can be found on the Ave Maria Athletics website.
 
Match 1 vs Goshen
 
The Blue and Green fell in three sets, 25-21, 25-18, 25-11, to Goshen in their first match of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Invitational. Goshen hit .343 on the match and committed just 13 errors in the three sets compared the Lady Gyrenes who hit at a .152 clip with 16 errors.
                                                                        
Lexy Smith led AMU with 10 kills in their invitational opener followed by Bre Holder with seven and Hannah Wurster with six. Lauren Ruby tallied 15 assists and Veronika Garcia posted 10 assists. Rachel Schultz and Jessica Schein each had seven digs.
 
After falling behind early in the first set, the Lady Gyrenes recorded six straight points to tie the match at 20-20. Goshen won five of the next six points to take the opening set 25-21. Similarly in the second set, the Blue and Green rallied to tie the match at 14-14 midway through the set but a six point run by Goshen a few points later put AMU in a 23-16 hole. Goshen went on to take the set 25-18. AMU never got things going in the third set, falling behind 15-3 early and eventually dropping the set 25-11.
 
Match 2 vs Indiana Tech
 
Indiana Tech bested the Lady Gyrenes in straight sets, 25-16, 25-12, 25-12, in the nightcap of day one of the Invitational. Indiana Tech hit at a .366 clip in the match while the Blue and Green had a hitting percentage of -.044.
 
Lexy Smith led the Lady Gyenes with nine kills. Veronika Garcia tallied seven assists for AMU while Monique Rivers finished with six digs.
 
Indiana Tech was able to jump out to early leads in each of the three sets and then maintain those leads the rest of the match.
