Ave Maria, FL—The Ave Maria University Women's Soccer team lost in heartbreaking fashion this afternoon in their home finale of 2015. The Lady Gyrenes and the Royals of Warner University were locked in a 1-1 tie that went into double overtime and was decided by a late penalty kick.
Sarah McBride put the blue and green up 1-0 as she found the back of the net late in the first half off of an assist from Alexia Mazzacone.
Just a few moments into the second half, Warner struck back as Jamie Murray was able to just beat the diving AMU keeper to set the score at 1-1.
The two teams would remain deadlocked at 1-1 through the rest of regulation and the game headed into overtime.
One overtime period would not be enough for the two Sun Conference competitors, as the two teams battled up and down the field but neither could break through. In the second overtime, a costly penalty in the box set up Warner attacker Naybet Fabo with a penalty shot and a chance to win the game with a golden goal and Fabo did just that as she sent her shot into the top left corner of the goal to finish off the marathon match.
The Lady Gyrenes will be back in action one last time in the 2015 regular season as the take on Southeastern University on Wednesday afternoon in Lakeland. You can get all the latest updates from that match and all things Ave Maria soccer right here at avemariagyrenes.com
