AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team defeated Florida Memorial University75-65 on Tuesday evening. The Gyrenes are 14-12 on the season, 5-9 in the Sun Conference. The Blue and Green will return to the court on Thursday evening at Tom Golisano field house when they will play Thomas University at 5 p.m.
All five starters scored in double figures; led by Yvanessa Vincent's 17 points on 7-8 shooting. Vincent also contributed 12 rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals. Annie Artise also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Lindsay finished the game with 16 points and four steals.
The first half proved to be a full twenty minutes of runs as there were four lead changes. The athletic Florida Memorial team took an early 10-4 lead as the Lady Gyrenes had trouble shooting from the perimeter. With 12 minutes remaining, AMU took a 18-14 lead in large part due to Vincent's three offensive rebounds which she turned into six points with the put back. Florida Memorial took the half time lead while shooting 43% from 3-point land. AMU shot 0/13 from behind the arc. 22 of AMU's 26 points came from the paint.
With 15 minutes remaining in the game, Florida Memorial had a narrow 43-39 lead over AMU. The Lady Gyrenes then go on a run of their own in the next five minutes to break away from Florida Memorial and take a 50-47 lead. Florida Memorial fired back with three steals to take a four point lead with six minutes to go in the game. AMU kept their cool as the Lions's aggressiveness in their zone led to defensive fouls that put AMU on the free throw line. Lauren Gillingham and Vincent each iced two free throws apiece to put the Lady Gyrenes ahead for good.
AMU had 40 total rebounds in the game, as Florida Memorial had 37. AMU shot better in the second half (50%). They also managed to shoot 50% from the 3-point line (4/8).
Leading the way for Florida Memorial was Nicole Collins with 16 points and seven rebounds.
