Gyrenes Down Northwood For First Conference WinÂ
West Palm Beach, FLA – Ave Maria baseball took game one of their three game series against Northwood on Friday afternoon in West Palm Beach. The 5-1 win marked the Gyrenes first Sun Conference win of the 2015 season.
GAME RECAPJunior starting pitcher Austin Munn (Lafayette, Ind.) gave a stellar performance on his way to his second victory of the season. After giving up a leadoff home run in the first inning to Northwood second baseman Gabby Mundo (Miami, Fla.) Munn settled in and dealt eight consecutive scoreless innings. On the day, the Gyrene right hander racked up thirteen strikeouts while walking only one.
Nick Sacchetta (Naples, Fla.) opened the scoring for the Gyrenes with a sac fly to left field in the third inning, scoring fellow senior Tucker Starkey (Mayville, Ky). Starkey would continue to lead Ave Maria's offensive attack, driving two home runs over the right field fence and scoring three of the Gyrenes five runs on the afternoon. Kellen Creech (Jacksonville, Fla.) came up big in the fifth with a two RBI single to further Ave Maria's scoring.
The 5-3 victory was the Gyrene's fifth straight win after beginning the season 0-3. Their record now stands at 5-3 heading into the rest of the weekend in Northwood.
UP NEXT: Ave Maria baseball returns to action again tomorrow against their Sun Conference counterparts, Northwood University. First pitch of the Saturday double header is scheduled for 11 a.m. and will be followed by game two shortly after game one's conclusion.Â
