LAKELAND, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team upset second-seed Southeastern, 60-59, on Tuesday night in a quarterfinals matchup of the Sun Conference Tournament. The Lady Gyrenes will play Webber International in the semifinals on Friday night. The final four will be hosted by St. Thomas in Miami Gardens.

Annie Artise led a balanced offensive attack for the Lady Gyrenes with 14 points and seven rebounds. Madison McDonald and Lauren Gillingham each added 12 points. Taylor Lindsey also finished in double-figures with 10 points. Both McDonald and Lindsey each pulled in seven boards apiece.

The Lady Gyrenes shot 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the floor and made nine threes. Southeastern made 19-of-53 from the field and matched the Lady Gyrenes nine makes from behind the arc. AMU converted 11-of-13 from the free throw line compared to 12-of-19 by the Fire. The teams combined to take 51 shot attempts from behind the arc.

Lindsey and Artise each made threes to start the game for AMU to give the Lady Gyrenes an early 6-3 advantage. With AMU leading 11-6, the Fire went on a 13-0 run to take an eight point lead, 19-11, with 10:20 to play in the opening half.

The Blue and Green responded a few minutes later, going on a 10-0 run over the final five minutes of the half to take a 28-23 lead into the break.

Alanna Roswarski hit a trey to open the scoring in the second half to give AMU an eight point edge. A few minutes later, the Lady Gyrenes' lead grew to 10, 37-27, after back-to-back threes by Gillingham.

The Fire responded with an 11-0 burst to take a 38-37 lead on the Blue and Green. The teams went back-and-forth over the next few minutes, exchanging leads seven times before the Lady Gyrenes took the lead for good on a McDonald three with 4:42 to play.

With 3:06 to play, Lindsey drove to the basket and made the layup and the free throw to complete the and-one to give the Lady Gyrenes a 56-51 lead. But the Fire wouldn't go away and cut it back to a two-point game with one minute to play.

After grabbing the defensive rebounded and getting fouled, McDonald converted both free throws with 2.1 second remaining to put the Lady Gyrenes in front by four, 60-56. Southeastern hit a three at the buzzer to make the final 60-59 in favor of the Blue and Green.
