CLERMONT, Fla. --- After dropping their opening game of the day to Middle Georgia, 2-0, the Ave Maria softball team rebounded for a 7-3 win over Coastal Georgia in game two to split on day two of the Southern Challenge.

The Lady Gyrenes return to action on Saturday when they welcome Edward Waters to AMU Softball Field for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.

The Blue and Green fell in their opening game to Middle Georgia College, 2-0. Cheyenne Benson took the loss after allowing two runs, neither earned, over six innings. She allowed six hits and struck out 10 on the afternoon.

The Lady Gyrenes weren't able to get to the Middle Georgia pitchers who allowed two hits and no runs over seven innings.

Middle Georgia got a run in the fist on a passed ball and scored another in the fifth on a Gyrene throwing error.

Brandi Griswold and McKayla Jeter recorded the two hits for AMU.

The Lady Gyrenes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game two against Coastal Georgia. After Griswold singled and stole second base, Emily Blackmore hit an RBI double to left field to plate Griswold.

The Blue and Green added three more in the bottom of the third inning. Alyssa Colding drew a bases loaded walk to plate Nikki Woodard and Jeter followed that up with a single to left to score Benson and Blackmore.

Coastal Georgia got a run in the top of the fourth to cut the AMU lead to 4-1. The Gyrene lead was cut to one, 4-3, in the top of the fifth when Coastal Georgia hit a two RBI double.

AMU got a little breathing room in the bottom of the fifth when Sarah Vinci singled in Rachel Curtiss to make the score 5-3 in favor of the Lady Gyrenes.

The Blue and Green put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hali Delashmet drew bases loaded walk to plate Grisword and Jessenia Gonzalez singled to right field to score Brianna Alonso to make the score 7-3.

Emily Lemin picked up her first win of the season going seven innings and striking out four. She allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits.Â
