Gyrenes Split With Spring ArborAve Maria, Fla. – The Ave Maria baseball team was able to split their Saturday afternoon double header against Spring Arbor University. Game one ended with a 4-0 score in favor of the Gyrenes before the tables would be turned and the blue and green were shut out in game two, 2-0. Ave Maria now moves to 10-14 on the season.
GAME 1 RECAPAustin Comesanas (Miami, Fla.) earned his second victory of the season for the Gyrenes in game one. The right hander went the distance, pitching all seven innings and striking out five on his way to the shutout.
Sean Trymbiski (Doylestown, Pa.) started up the AMU offense with an RBI single in the third inning. In the fifth, Tucker Starkey (Mayville, Ky.) lined a big two run home run over the right field fence to make the
AMU lead 3-0. Nick Sacchetta (Naples, Fla.) added a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 4-0, where it would stay for a final.
GAME 2 RECAPGame two would prove to be a pitcher's duel, as both starts gave their team's complete game performances.
Zack Quayle (Knoxville, Tenn.) had an outstanding afternoon for the Gyrenes. The lefty went seven innings and allowed only one earned run while striking out eight Spring Arbor batters.
The Cougars starter Mitchel Patterson (Byron Center, Mich.) was lights out in game two. The southpaw went seven full innings for Spring Arbor, one hitting the Gyrenes and striking out six along the way. Patterson didn't allow a single run and with the support of two runs from the offense picked up the shout victory by a score of 2-0.
UP NEXT: The Gyrenes will travel up to Daytona Beach to take on Tennessee Wesleyan at Embry-Riddle University on Monday at 11 a.m. before returning home for a game with St. Xavier University on Tuesday afternoon.
