Lady Gyrenes Split At Edward Waters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team rebounded from a game one loss to Edward Waters with a 7-3 win in game two to split Saturday's twin bill. The Blue and Green move to 8-13 on the season as they will now head to Cocoa, Fla., to take part in the Cocoa Expo Spring Games.
 
Edward Waters jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring three in the second and one in the fourth, to take a 4-0 lead. The Lady Gyrenes got one run back in the top of the fifth on a Nikki Woodard single to left field to score Miranda Dessecker.
 
After Edward Waters scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Blue and Green scored two in the top of the seventh to make the final 5-3. Dessecker had an RBI single in the top of the seventh to plate Hali Delashmet for the first run in the inning. A few batters later, Rachel Curtiss reached on a fielder's choice to score Deanna Stirtzinger.
 
Jessenia Gonzalez took the loss after pitching two innings and allowing three runs, all unearned. She allowed three hits while walking one and striking out one. Emily Lemin and Cheyenne Benson pitched four scoreless innings in relief in the game one.
 
It didn't take long for AMU to get on the board in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Kingsley Avery scored the first run of the game, scoring on a throwing error by the Edward Waters catcher after a sac bunt attempt by Brandi Griswold. In the ensuing at-bat, Benson doubled to right field to bring in Griswold. A couple batters later, Benson came in to score on a McKayla Jeter sac fly.
 
The Blue and Green added a run in the fourth on a RBI double by Avery to score Stirtzinger and another in the fifth on a Alyssa Colding RBI single to plate Benson.
 
After Edward Waters got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third, the Lady Gyrenes made it 6-1 on a Caitlin Constance RBI groundout to score Stirtzinger. The Lady Tigers scored two in the bottom of the fourth before Constance picked up another RBI on a sac bunt in the top of the sixth to score Avery to make the final score 7-3.
 
Avery finished game two four-for-four with a double, triple, two runs scored, and one RBI. Benson finished two-for-four with a double, triple, two runs scored and one RBI.
 
Benson started game two and was credited with the win after pitching two scoreless innings. Constance pitched four innings in relief, allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits. Gonzalez pitched one scoreless inning to finish out the game.
 
The Lady Gyrenes return to action on Sunday when they take on Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
