TITUSVILLE, Fla. --- The Lady Gyrene softball team fell, 2-0, to St. Mary-of-the-Woods in game one before taking game two 6-5 to earn a split on Sunday night. The Blue and Green (9-14) return to action on Monday when they take on Waynesburg University in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

It was a pitcher's duel in game one, with both starters putting up zeros over the first four innings. St. Mary-of-the-Woods got on the board in the fifth inning, scoring on a Lady Gyrene error. They added another run in the seventh on bases-loaded hit by pitch to take a 2-0 which proved to be good enough to take game one.

Cheyenne Benson took the loss for the Blue and Green after allowing two runs, one earned, over seven innings. She gave up seven hits and walked one while striking out five. Kingsley Avery and Deanna Stirtzinger each recorded a pair of hits in game one for AMU. Benson and Marlie Braddy recorded the other two hits for the Lady Gyrenes.

In game two, the Lady Gyrenes got on the board early thanks to a two-run homerun by Benson. St. Mary-of-the-Woods got one back in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 2-1.

In the top of the second, Avery doubled to left field to score Miranda Dessecker and Deanna Stirtzinger. The Lady Gyrenes increased their lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth when Dessecker scored on an error by the St. Mary shortstop.

St. Mary cut the Gyrenes lead to two, 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homerun. The Lady Gyrenes picked up an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Stirtzinger reached on an error which scored Rachel Curtiss. St. Mary added a run in the bottom of the sixth and the bottom of the seventh to make the final 6-5 in favor of the Blue and Green.

Emily Lemin picked up the win in game two, pitching seven innings and allowing five runs, three earned. She allowed eight hits and walked two while striking out four. Avery finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in game two. Benson finished the game with two hits in four at-bats with two RBI and a run scored.Â
