Softball Takes Two Against Waynesburg

TITUSVILLE, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team swept their doubleheader against Waynesburg University on Monday afternoon, needing just five innings in each game to do so. The Blue and Green took game one 12-4 and game two 11-2.
 
The Lady Gyrenes improve to 11-14 on the season and will return to action on Tuesday for a single game against Bloomfield College beginning at 1 p.m.
 
The Blue and Green struck quickly in the game one, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alyssa Colding started things off with a three-run homerun to put AMU in front. A few batters later, Deanna Stirtzinger singled to left to score Victoria Thompson followed by a three-RBI triple to right by Kinsgley Avery to make the score 7-0.
 
After Waynesburg got a run back in the second, AMU fired again in the third innings with a Brandi Griswold single to right field to score Miranda Dessecker. Cheyenne Benson then doubled in Griswold to extend the AMU lead to 9-1.
 
Waynesburg scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull within five, 9-4, before the Lady Gyrenes responded with three of their own in the bottom half of the innings to make the score 12-4. Dessecker doubled in two of the runs followed by an RBI single by Nikki Woodard.
 
Avery, Griswold, and Dessecker each recorded multiple hits in game one. In total, nine different Lady Gyrenes recorded a hit, eight scored a run, and seven picked up an RBI. Avery and Colding each had three RBI while Dessecker scored three runs.
 
In game one, Jessenia Gonzalez and Caitlin Constance combined to one-hit Wayneburg. Gonzalez earned the win in game one, allowing one unearned run on no hits and two walks. She struck out four batters. Constance pitched the final two innings, and allowed three unearned runs on one hit and a walk.
 
In game two, the Lady Gyrenes picked up a run in each of the first three innings before busting the game open with eight runs in the fourth inning.
 
Benson got the scoring started with an RBI single to score Avery in the top of the first. In the second inning, Avery singled in Thompson to make the score 2-0. A double to left field by Stirtzinger in the top of the third scored Benson to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Blue and Green.
 
In the eight-run fourth inning, Benson got things going with a RBI single to plate Avery. After Colding reached on an error that scored Griswold, McKayla Jeter hit a two-RBI single to score Colding and Benson. Sarah Vinci and Dessecker finished the inning with a pair of two-RBI doubles to make the score 11-0.
 
Waynesburg got two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 11-2.
 
Avery finished three-for-three with two runs scored and an RBI. Benson and Thompson each recorded two hits and scored two runs. Benson, Jeter, Vinci, and Dessecker each recorded two RBI. Ten different Lady Gyrenes tallied a hit and seven players picked up RBIs in game two.
 
Gonzalez picked up her second win in the circle on the day in game two. She pitched 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings while walking three and striking out three. On the day, she pitched 5.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on no hits, five walks and seven strikeouts.
 
Emily Lemin finished game two, allowing two runs over 2.1 innings. She allowed four hits and walked one while striking out four.
