Boca Raton, Fla. – Wednesday afternoon Ave Maria baseball was across the state in Boca Raton to take on Lynn University. The Gyrenes and the NCAA Division II Fighting Knights, who are currently ranked #22 in the NCAA Division II polls, played a tightly contested game that ended in a 4-2 loss for AMU. With the loss Ave Maria is now 19-31 on the season.
GAME RECAPOffense was hard to come by in the early going of Wednesday afternoon's matchup. Through the first four innings, AMU starter Andrew Steele and Lynn starter Robert Guarnieri went back and forth with scoreless frames.
The Gyrenes finally we able to break through in the seventh inning when Rico Soto laced a leadoff single to left field. Later in the inning, Soto would make his was around the bases and score on a Lynn error to give AMU a 1-0 lead.
Lynn struck back in the bottom of the seventh on a series of Gyrene defensive miscues that led to two unearned runs. The Knights would take advantage of more Ave Maria mistakes in the bottom of the eight, resulting in two more runs, making the score 4-1 heading into the ninth.
In the top of the ninth the Gyrenes would add a run off a fielder's choice from Christian Sanchez but the rally would fall short, leaving the final score at 4-2.
Andrew Giddens took the loss for AMU in relief of Steele. Guarnieri picked up his fourth win of the year for Lynn and Kyle Schindler earned his fifth save of the season.
UP NEXT: This weekend Ave Maria will travel to Lake Wales for their final conference series of the season against Warner University.
