Lady Gyrenes, Eagles Split Friday Twin Bill

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team and the Embry-Riddle Lady Eagles split Friday's doubleheader in Daytona Beach. Embry-Riddle took game one 3-1 while the Lady Gyrenes won game two 2-1. The Blue and Green move to 22-10 on the season and to 6-4 in Sun Conference play.


Game 1 Recap
  • Marlie Braddy got the Blue and Green on the board with an RBI single to right center to score Madison Benitez and put AMU ahead 3-1 in the top of the fourth innings.
  • Embry-Riddle responded with two in the bottom half of the fourth and another run in the bottom of the sixth to take game one 3-1.
  • The Eagles out-hit AMU 7-5 in game one. AMU had two errors in the first game compared to one by ERAU.
  • Cheyenne Benson allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts in the loss. She drops to 9-11 on the season. 

Game 2 Recap
  • Ave Maria again got on the board first in game two with a run in the top of the second on a RBI infield single by Brandi Griswold to bring in McKayla Jeter.
  • After Embry-Riddle tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, the Lady Gyrenes retook the lead on a Benson sac fly to plate Griswold in the top of the fifth inning.
  • The Lady Gyrenes out-hit Embry-Riddle 12-5 in game two.
  • Emily Lemin pitched six innings and allowed one run on five hits and four walks. She struck out six as she improved to 8-8 on the year.
  • Benson pitched a perfect seventh innings to earn her first save of the season.

Up Next
  • Ave Maria concludes its home slate on Saturday against Saint Thomas University (Fla.). The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. In between games, the Lady Gyrenes will honor their four seniors.
