St. Thomas Takes Two From Lady Gyrenes

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team fell in a pair of games against the visiting St. Thomas University Lady Bobcats this weekend. After a rain delay pushed the final half inning of game one to Sunday morning, STU was able to close out the game for an 8-1 win. In game two, the Lady Gyrenes fell 5-3 after a Lady Bobcat rally in the top of the seventh. Prior to the game today, the Lady Gyrenes honored their four seniors.

Game 1 Recap
  • Both teams picked up a run in the first inning. After St. Thomas took a 1-0 lead, Cheyenne Benson reached on a dropped fly ball by the STU center fielder which allowed Kingsley Avery to score.
  • The Lady Bobcats added three runs in the fourth with two coming on a two-run home run by Jessica Matias.
  • St. Thomas added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to make the final score 8-1.
  • Avery finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Benson took the loss in game one after allowing five runs, four earned, over five innings.

Game 2 Recap
  • In game two, both teams again got on the board in the first inning. Trailing 1-0, Alyssa Colding singled to left field to plate Avery to tie the game.
  • In the third inning, Benson doubled to left field to bring in Avery. In the ensuing at-bat, Colding picked up her second RBI of the game, driving in Victoria Thompson on a error by the Bobcat catcher.
