Lady Gyrenes Fall In TSC Championship To USCB

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team's season came to an end on Saturday as they dropped a pair of games to two-seed and 17th-ranked South Carolina Beaufort in the double-elimination Sun Conference Tournament. USCB took game one 8-3 and game two 15-6.
 
Kingsley Avery, Cheyenne Benson, and Alyssa Colding were each named to the All-Tournament team.
 
After USCB jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Lady Gyrenes were able to respond quickly with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-RBI double by Alyssa Colding to tie the game.
 
The Blue and Green took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second on a Kingsley Avery single to right field to bring in Deanna Stirtzinger.
 
The Sand Sharks used a three-run fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead and then a three-run sixth inning to make the final score 8-3. The Sand Sharks out hit the Lady Gyrenes in game one 12-10.
 
Avery finished game one 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Colding and Stirtzinger also recorded multiple hits in game one with two apiece.
 
Cheyenne Benson took the loss in game one, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and one walk over seven innings. She struck out two.
 
In game two, the Sand Sharks used a pair of seven run innings to run away with the game. USCB scored seven in the top of the third inning to take a 7-0 lead.
 
The Lady Gyrenes got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth when Colding scored on a USCB error and Hali Delashmet scored on a RBI groundout by Sarah Vinci.
 
The Blue and Green added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a Delashmet sacrifice fly to bring in Victoria Thompson.
 
The Sand Sharks tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth to make the score 8-3 before breaking the game open with seven runs in the top of the seventh.
 
AMU scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 15-6.
 
Avery and Colding each finished with three hits in game two while Delashmet added a pair of hits. The trio combined for 15 of the 18 AMU hits in the two games and all eight hits in game two.
 
Emily Lemin took the loss in game two, allowing 15 runs, 11 earned, on 14 hits and four walks. She struck out five.
 
AMU was out hit 14-8 in game two.
 
With the wins, USCB earned an automatic bid into the NAIA National Championships.
