Lady Gyrenes Take Down Florida National 3-0

HIALEAH, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team completed the season sweep of Florida National on Friday night with a straight set win in Hialeah. The Lady Gyrenes improve to 9-2 overall and 4-0 on the season against the Lady Conquistadors.
 
Game Recap
 
  • The Lady Gyrenes came out firing, winning seven of the game's first nine points to take an early 7-2 lead. The Blue and Green extended their lead later in the set, taking six straight points with Veronika Garcia serving to take a 14-6 advantage. AMU led by as many as 12 in the set and went on to win the opening game 25-13.
  • The second set was more competitive from the start with the two teams all-square at seven early in the set. After AMU took six straight points to take a 13-8 lead, Florida National battled back to pull within one at 13-12. The Lady Gyrenes won seven of the next nine points to take a 20-14 lead and eventually went on to win the set 25-19.
  • Tied at 10-all in the third set, the Lady Gyrenes won eight straight points on Mercedyz Mitchell's serve to take a 18-10 edge. Three of the points came on service aces by Mitchell. After a late rally by Florida National made the score 23-18, AMU won the final two points to take the set 25-18.
 
Stat Leaders
 
  • Lexy Smith led the Blue and Green with eight kills on the night. 13 different players recorded a kill for AMU. Lexie Andric, Marie Mendez, Taylor Wojciechowski, and Aspen Davidson each tallied four kills for the Lady Gyrenes.
  • Garcia (16) and Lauren Ruby (11) led AMU in assists while Monique Rivers tallied a team-high 17 digs.
 
Up Next
 
  • The Lady Gyrenes will begin a three match week on Tuesday when they travel to Trinity Baptist College for a 5 p.m. start. The Blue and Green then return home to face Florida College on Thursday night before beginning Sun Conference play at Warner on Friday.
