Warner Takes Down Lady Gyrenes In Four

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- After Ave Maria won the first set, 25-20, Warner took the final three sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22, to hand the Lady Gyrenes their second straight loss. The Blue and Green fall to 10-4 on the season and to 0-1 in Sun Conference play.
 
GAME RECAP
 
  • Trailing 5-3 early in the opening set, the Lady Gyrenes won six of the next seven points, capped by back-to-back service aces by Keke Smith, to take a 9-6 lead. With Warner leading 19-18, a kill by Taylor Wojciechowski tied the match at 19-all. The Blue and Green won the next three points on Veronika Garcia's serve to take a 22-19 advantage. AMU took the final three points of the game to take the set 25-20.
  • Ave Maria built a slim, 14-10, lead in the second set to force Warner to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Lady Gyrenes continued to maintain its lead until six-straight points by the Lady Royals put Warner in front 21-19. AMU was able to tie the game on multiple occasions but weren't able to take a lead as Warner went on to win the set 25-23.
  • In the third set, Ave Maria was forced to call a timeout after Warner jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Still trailing by six, 17-11, the Lady Gyrenes won eight straight points on Rachel Schultz's serve to take a 19-17 advantage. Warner responded by taking eight of the final nine points in the game to take the set 25-20.
  • The teams went back-and-forth in the fourth set until Warner went on a six point run to take a 21-16 lead on the Lady Gyrenes. Ave Maria responded by winning six of the next seven points to even the match at 22-22. The Lady Royals closed out the match by winning the final three points to win the set 25-22.
 
STAT LEADERS
 
  • After registering 22 kills to nine errors in the first two sets, the Lady Gyrenes committed more errors (15) than kills (14) over the final two sets in the loss. AMU hit at a .091 clip for the match.
  • Lexy Smith and Wojciechowski each tallied 10 kills in the match. Lexy Smith also had seven total blocks.
  • Veronika Garcia recorded a double-double with 14 assists and 12 digs.
  • Rachel Schultz finished with 15 digs while Lauren Ruby added 16 assists for the Lady Gyrenes.
 
COMING UP
 
  • AMU will return to Tom Golisano Field House next week for three home matches. The Lady Gyrenes will welcome Webber on Wednesday before hosting Trinity College on Thursday night. Ave Maria concludes the week against Warner on Saturday afternoon.
