Lady Gyrenes Fall To Webber In Straight Sets

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team fell to Webber International in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21, 25-15, on Wednesday night. The Lady Gyrenes drop to 10-5 on the season and to 0-2 in Sun Conference play.
 
Lexy Smith led the Lady Gyrenes with 10 kills and two total blocks. Taylor Wojciechowski finished with nine kills and two blocks. Lauren Ruby tallied a team-high 15 assists followed by Veronika Garcia with 13 assists. Monique Rivers totaled 10 digs.
 
Bethany Forsyth led the Lady Warriors with 13 kills. Sophie Rossard finished with a game-high 26 assists to go along with six kills. Michelle Calderon had 14 digs.
 
It was a back-and-forth opening set, with the Lady Gyrenes able to win three straight points to break a 14-14 tie and take a 17-14 lead. Webber battled back to tie the game at 20-all and then went on to take five of the final six points to take the first set 25-21.
 
It was a similar start in the second set, with AMU able to take a slim lead midway through the set 17-14. With the Lady Gyrenes trailing 21-20, a kill by Lexy Smith tied the game at 21-21. Webber won the next four points to take the set 25-21.
 
The third set was all Webber with the Lady Warriors winning the first four points en route to a quick 10-4 lead. Webber pushed their lead to ten, 18-8, before AMU won three straight points to cut the deficit to seven. The Lady Warriors went on the win the game 25-15 to close out the match in three sets.
 
It's a short turnaround for the Lady Gyrenes as they will welcome Trinity College of Florida to Tom Golisano Field House on Thursday at 6 p.m.
