Ave Maria Defeats Trinity College In Straight Sets

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team rolled to a straight set victory over Trinity College of Florida on Thursday night. The Blue and Green improve to 11-5 on the season as they get ready to welcome Warner to Tom Golisano Field House on Saturday afternoon.
 
Lexy Smith led the Lady Gyrenes with 12 kills and three total blocks. Lauren Howell and Bre Holder each tallied six kills for the Blue and Green while Hannah Wurster and Taylor Wojciechowski each added five kills for AMU.
 
Veronika Garcia (20) and Lauren Ruby (14) combined for 34 of the Lady Gyrenes 38 kills. Ruby also added a team-high 11 digs. Keke Smith had nine digs to go along with four service aces.
 
After falling behind early in the opening set, 6-2, the Lady Gyrenes rallied to tie the game at 11-all. Trailing 18-16, AMU rattled off four straight points to take a 20-18 lead. Ave Maria would hold on to that lead en route to a 25-20 first set win.
 
It didn't take long for the Lady Gyrenes to take command of the second set, jumping out to an early 9-3 advantage on back-to-back service aces by Monique Rivers. After withstanding a brief rally by Trinity College, the Blue and Green went on to take the set 25-18.
 
The Blue and Green fell behind in the third set early, 9-5, but won four straight points to even the game at 9-all. AMU won seven of the next nine points to build a 16-11 lead and take control of the set. Leading 20-15, the Lady Gyrenes won the final five points to take the game 25-15 and the match 3-0.
 
As a team, Ave Maria hit at a .275 clip while Trinity College had a hitting percentage of .104. AMU committed only 12 errors compared to 19 by the Lady Tigers. Chelsea Seip led Trinity College with 10 kills and two service aces.
 
The Lady Gyrenes return to action on Saturday afternoon when Warner makes the trip down from Lake Wales for a 2 p.m. match.
