Volleyball Defeats Dickinson State 3-1

LAKE WALES, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team improved to 7-2 on the season with a 3-1 win over Dickinson State to conclude the Warner Lady Royals Labor Day Classic. The Blue and Green went 2-1 at the two-day event. Lexy Smith was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
Game Recap
 
  • It appeared as if the Lady Gyrenes would cruise in the opening set of the match after jumping out to a 10-3 lead early in the first set but Dickinson State would battle back and eventually tie the game at 19-all. Still tied at 23-all, Lexy Smith picked up kills on each of the next two points to give the first set to the Lady Gyrenes 25-23.
  • The second set went back-and-forth with neither team able to take a lead of more than two points until AMU took a 15-12 lead midway through the set. The Lady Gyrenes held on to a slim lead for the remainder of the set, eventually taking the set 25-22.
  • Dickinson State jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the third set, only to see AMU win eight of the next nine points to take an 11-7 lead. With AMU leading by two, Dickinson State went on a 5-0 run to take a three point advantage. DSU would go on to win the set 26-24.
  • Trailing 6-3 to start the fourth set, the Lady Gyrenes won six straight points to take a 9-6 lead on Dickinson State. AMU would maintain a 2-3 point lead for most of the set until Dickinson State would pull within one at 24-23. Lexy Smith added another kill to her total to close out the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.

  • Lexy Smith recorded a match-high 19 kills while Hannah Wurster also finished with double-digit kills with 11.
  • Veronika Garcia tallied 23 assists in the match.
  • Monique Rivers led the Blue and Green with eight digs.
