Lady Gyrenes Pick Up First TSC Win

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Lady Gyrenes routed Florida Memorial, 84-59, on Saturday afternoon to pick up their first Sun Conference win of the season. Lauren Gillingham and Annie Artise led four Lady Gyrenes in double-figures with 19 points each. AMU improves to 7-8 overall and to 1-5 in TSC play.
 
Gillingham flirted with a triple-double, finishing with nine assists and seven rebounds to go with her 19 points. Katie Houbolt was 6-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from three to finish with 16 points. Taylor Lindsey added 11 points, six assists, and five steals. Erin Koehler had a game-high nine rebounds.
 
The Blue and Green shot 47 percent for the game and a blistering 56 percent from three, connecting on 14-of-25 from behind the arc. AMU also made 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Florida Memorial shot 42 percent from the field and were 2-of-11 from three.
 
Ashley Henry led the Lions with 16 points and six rebounds. Abreona Cabell finished with 9 points and eight rebounds.
 
Florida Memorial jumped out to the early lead and led for the first several minutes of the opening quarter before a three-pointer by Gillingham tied the game at 10 with 2:56 to play in the first. A few minutes later, Kandice Smith hit a three to break a 14-14 tie to help AMU to a 17-16 lead after one quarter of play.
 
With Ave leading 22-21, the Lady Gyrenes went on a 17-8 run to take a seven points lead, 37-30. Houbolt was 5-for-5 during the run, including making three from behind the arc, which spanned six minutes of game time. Ave Maria led by six, 39-33, at the half.
 
Leading by five, Gillingham scored six-straight points capped by a successful lay-up and-one to push the Lady Gyrenes' lead to double-digits, 53-42. The Blue and Grene continued to extend their advantage in the fourth quarter, scoring the first 10 points of the quarter to take a 73-48 edge. AMU would lead by as many as 30 in the fourth quarter before finishing the game with an 84-59 victory.
 
The Lady Gyrenes return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Lake Wales to take on Warner in a conference matchup. The game is set to tip at 5 p.m.
