Gyrenes Edged At Webber, 83-77

BABSON PARK, Fla. --- The Ave Maria men's basketball team fell at Webber International, 83-77, in a conference matchup on Thursday night. Martez Harris led five Gyrenes in double-figures with 16 points.
 
Ave Maria falls to 5-18 overall and to 2-8 against Sun Conference opponents.
 
Harris also added five rebounds to go along with five assists. Brandon Dean had 15 points and Malik Hall added 11 points for AMU. Nate Krimsky finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Julian Adams also finished in double-figures with 10 points.
 
The Gyrenes shot 42 percent from the field for the game and were 11-of-31 from behind the arc. Webber made 47 percent of its shots from the field and were 6-of-15 from three. The Warriors made 21 free throws compared to 10 by AMU.
 
Dewaine Lyals led Webber with 22 points and nine rebounds. Ronzell Evans added eight points to go with 11 rebounds for the Warriors.
 
After Webber jumped out to an 8-2 lead, AMU battled back and used a 10-0 run to take an 18-14 advantage at the 11:56 mark in the first half. The teams exchanged baskets over the next several minutes before a 10-3 spurt by the Warriors gave Webber a 37-30 lead with six minutes to play in the half. A three just before the half by Greenan Sullivan pulled the Gyrenes to within two, 46-44, at the break.
 
Early in the second half, AMU made three straight baskets to give the Gyrenes a 50-46 lead. With Ave leading 52-46, an 11 point run gave Webber a 57-52 edge with 13:25 to play. The Blue and Green didn't give in, and a three by Exor Torres with 6:44 remaining, tied the game at 64-64. Trailing by two, a pair of put back layups by Webber extended the Warrior lead to six, 76-70. After the Gyrenes cut the deficit to one, 76-75, Webber made a layup and then banked in a shot as the shot clock expired to give the Warriors an 80-75 lead with 20 seconds to play.
 
The Gyrenes hit the road again on Saturday when they travel to North Miami to take on Johnson & Wales at 4 p.m.
