Lady Gyrenes Falter Late, Drop 62-53 Decision At Webber

BABSON PARK, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team fell 62-53 at Webber International on Thursday night. The Blue and Green led by two at the half before getting outscored 32-21 in the second half.
 
Lauren Gillingham led the Lady Gyrenes with 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Taylor Lindsey finished with 12 points while Yvanessa Vincent (10 points, 7 rebounds) and Annie Artise (9 points, 10 rebounds) each nearly tallied a double-double.
 
Neither team shot particularly well from the floor, with Webber holding a slight edge 39 percent to 28 percent. The Lady Gyrenes were just 4-of-21 from behind the arc and were 9-of-14 from the free throw line.
 
Three Warriors finished with 11 points. Mar'Lisa Braxton led Webber with 11 points and 12 boards.
 
Ave Maria jumped out to a 7-2 lead before seeing Webber fight back to take a 10-9 lead with 3:47 to play in the opening quarter. With 23 seconds to play in the first, Lindsey hit a jumper to give AMU a 19-16 lead after one.
 
After Webber tied the game at 21-21, Lindsey made back-to-back baskets and Artise hit a jumper to put AMU in from 28-21. The Lady Gyrenes went cold over the final 5:28 of the quarter to allow Webber to get back into the game. Vincent hit a jumper with three seconds remaining to give AMU a 32-30 advantage at the half.
 
The Lady Gyrenes maintained a slim lead for the first several minutes of the third quarter before Webber tied the game at 45-45 with 2:53 on the clock. Webber would lead 50-48 after three quarters of play.
 
AMU was outscored 12-5 in the fourth quarter as Webber would go on to win 62-53.
 
The Lady Gyrenes return to Tom Golisano Field House on Saturday when they host Johnson & Wales for a 2 p.m. tip.
