The Ave Maria University volleyball team cruised to a victory over Edward Waters College on Monday night, snapping a five match losing streak with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-15 triumph over the Tigers at the Tom Golisano Field House. It was the second 3-0 victory of the season for the Gyrenes over Edward Waters, with the first coming in Jacksonville back in late August.
Â
The first set saw the Gyrenes dominate on the attack, recording 13 kills to just three for the visiting Tigers. Hannah Wurster had four kills in the opening frame, and was one of five Lady Gyrenes to have at least two. The second set was more evenly matched, with Ave Maria needing to score the final six points of the set to claim the eight-point victory after Edward Waters had trimmed the AMU lead to 19-17. The game-ending 6-0 run was the longest consecutive stretch of scoring for either team.
Â
In the third set, Ave Maria stormed out to a big lead behind a strong service game, logging seven aces en route to a 23-9 lead. The Gyrenes then withstood a late 6-1 run to close out the Tigers.
Â
Lauren Ruby was seemingly everywhere on the floor, leading the Gyrenes with six aces and 29 assists. Ruby, who also had five kills of her own, primarily set up Lexy Smith and Wurster, who combined for 21 kills in the win. Lexie Andric added five kills and a game-high eight digs, while libero Jessica Schein supplied eight more digs.
Â
Facing NAIA's leaders in aces per set, the Gyrenes dominated with 14 total aces. Five Gyrenes posted at least one ace, led by Ruby, Andric, and two from Aspen Davidson. Conversely, the Tigers were held to just four aces and had eight service errors.
Â
Edward Waters was led statistically by Larissa Pereira and Kaylin Davidson, who each logged eight kills. Ashlyn Pavlock recorded 17 of the Tigers' 18 assists, and Kayla Morales had the game high in digs with eleven.
Â
Ave Maria will continue their stretch of four matches in six days on Tuesday night, when the Gyrenes travel to Miami Gardens for a conference battle against Florida Memorial University. The next home game is set for Thursday against Florida National University. Both the Tuesday road match and Thursday's home date are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. starts.
