AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals on a free kick and a penalty kick to take down Webber International 2-1. The Lady Gyrenes improve to 4-7 overall and to 2-4 against Sun Conference opponents.
Â
Webber got the scoring started with a goal by Janel Ebanks in the sixth minute to give the Warriors an early 1-0 advantage.
Â
With Webber still leading to start the second half, Meghan Precord was able to take advantage of a free kick from just a few yards outside the box to tie the game at one. Precord's shot drew into the bottom corner of the net and had enough pace to slip through the Webber netminder's hands for the goal.
Â
Then, just two minutes later, Alexia Mazzoccone drew a foul in the goalie box and was able to successfully convert the penalty kick to give AMU the lead, 2-1. Webber gave a final push in the final 20 minutes but AMU was able to fend them off for the win.
Â
The teams were even in shots with 14 apiece but AMU held a 7-6 advantage on shots on goal. Each netminder made five saves.
Â
Francesca Singleton picked up the win for AMU.
Â
Precord led the Lady Gyrenes with one goal on five shots and two shots on goal. Mazzoccone had the other goal on four shots and three shots on goal. Caitlin Waites also recorded multiple shots.
Â
The Lady Gyrenes return to action on Saturday when they welcome SCAD-Savannah to AMU Soccer Field for a 12 p.m. contest.
