Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- The Ave Maria Football team dropped a heartbreaker in their season finale on Saturday afternoon, a 24-20 decision at The Apprentice School. AMU held a 20-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Builders scored 10 unanswered including a touchdown with less than a minute remaining.

Ave Maria opened the scoring with a 65-yard touchdown run by Austin Cole with 4:41 remaining in the first quarter. Early in the second, an interception return for a touchdown and a successful point after attempt gave the Builders a 7-6 edge. AMU responded with a 39-yard touchdown pass from Bob Orban to Andrew Wilson to give the Gyrenes a 12-7 lead, a lead that they would take into the half.

The Apprentice School opened the third quarter with a touchdown to retake the lead 14-12. Early in the fourth quarter, Ramsey Bennett recovered a blocked punt in a punt attempt by the Apprentice School in the end zone for an AMU touchdown to give the Blue and Green a 20-14 advantage with 14:50 remaining. Midway through the fourth quarter, The Apprentice School made a 23-yard field goal to cut the AMU lead to three, 20-17. The Builders then scored with 53 seconds remaining to take a 24-20 lead late in the game.

Orban finished the game 8-for-20 for 105 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Cole ran the ball three times for 78 yards and a touchdown. Nelson Stone added 55 yards on 17 carries. Andrew Wilson scored on his only reception of the game while three others finished with a pair of receptions.

Ayshad Thornton led the Gyrene defense with 14 total tackles (13 solo) and two tackles for a loss.
