MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. --- Trailing by as many as 15 in the second quarter and nine at the half, the Ave Maria women's basketball team outscored Bryan College 40-30 in the second half to edge the Lions 64-63.
Jasmine Bateman led the Lady Gyrenes with 24 points and seven rebounds. She was 6-of-17 from the field and was 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Lauren Gillingham and Sarah Miller each added eight points as nine different Lady Gyrenes' scored on the afternoon.
Ave Maria shot 31 percent for the game and were 22-of-25 from the free throw line while Bryan shot 45 percent from the field and were 15-of-24 from the charity stripe. Megan Billingsby lead three Lions in double-figures with 18 points.
The Lady Gyrenes struggled from the floor in the first half, making 26 percent of their shots and going 1-of-10 from behind the arc. Trailing by 14, Kandice Smith made the first three of the game for AMU at the 49 second mark in the second half. Amanda Kasprzak capped the five-run spurt by the Lady Gyrenes with a pair of free throws just before the end of the half to make it a nine-point halftime deficit for AMU.
The Blue and Green chipped away at the Lions lead in the third quarter and came to within five, 50-45, heading to the fourth. Midway through the fourth, Bateman hit a three followed by a jumper by Erin Koehler to tie the game at 56. Bryan maintain the lead over the closing minutes and with six seconds remaining, Bateman converted a layup to put AMU ahead 64-63. The lead was the first for the Lady Gyrenes since 6:02 remaining in the first quarter.
With the win, Ave Maria improves to 5-5 on the season. They will conclude their play in the NAIA Southern Challenge with a matchup against Point on Friday at 4 p.m.
