MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team dropped a 61-48 decision against Point in Miami Gardens on Friday evening. The Lady Gyrenes trailed by seven heading to the fourth before Point's defense held AMU to six fourth quarter points.

Lauren Gillingham led the Blue and Green with 20 points and seven rebounds. Jasmine Bateman finished with 17 points while Sarah Miller added seven points and nine rebounds.

Ave Maria shot 37 percent from the field and were 2-of-10 from deep. Point made 47 percent of their shots from the field.

The two teams were neck and neck on points in the paint with Point holding a 36-34 edge but the Skyhawks finished with a 14-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

Point held a slim lead for most of the first half and took a two-point lead into the half, 32-30. In the third quarter, the Skyhawks began to increase their lead, leading by as many as nine with 15 second to play in the quarter. The Lady Gyrenes were unable to turn in a second-straight come-from-behind win, getting outscored 12-6, in the fourth.

After shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half, Ave Maria was 6-of-25 (24 percent) from the field and 0-for-4 from three over the final two quarters.

The 5-6 Lady Gyrenes return to the court on January 5 when they travel to West Palm Beach to take on Keiser at 7 p.m.
