Lady Gyrenes Sweep Calumet-St. Joseph

BABSON PARK, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team swept Calumet College of St. Joseph on Sunday in Babson Park. The Blue and Green won game one 4-2 before walking off in game two for a 3-2 win.

Ave Maria jumped on the Crimson Wave early in game one, scoring three runs in the top of the first to give pitcher Sadie Mosher an early lead. Mosher helped herself out in the top of the first with an RBI single to plate Marinna Shadley. A couple batter later, Genevieve Twigg hit a 2-RBI single to left to bring in Mosher and Alyssa Colding.

After the Crimson Wave scored a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth to pull within one, the Lady Gyrenes responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth. The run came when Kingsley Avery reached on an error that allowed Danielle Garcia to score.

Mosher pitched a complete game, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks. She struck out six in the win. She improves to 2-1 on the season with the victory.

In game two, it was Calumet-St. Joseph that got on the board first. The Crimson Wave scored two in the top of the first to put AMU in an early 2-0 hole. Deanna Stirtzinger cut that lead in half in the bottom of the second with her first home run of the season.

Still trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Colding reached on a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt that allowed Shadley to come home to tie the game at two.

In the bottom of the seventh, Twigg delivered the game-winning hit, an RBI single to left center to bring in Colding winning it for AMU.

Gennifer Raulerson earned the win, pitching a complete game and allowing two runs. She allowed seven hits and walked two while striking out one.

Ave Maria returns to action on Friday when they begin play at the NAIA Preview in Tampa.
