Women's Soccer Picks Up First Win of 2016

The Ave Maria University women's soccer earned their first victory of the 2016 season, taking down conference foe Warner in a midweek non-conference matchup. Not only was it the first win of the season for the Lady Gyrenes but it was also the first win for Emily Tyner as head coach.

AMU set the tone from the opening kick, controlling the ball and pinning Warner on their side of the pitch for much of the first half. Genevieve Riley opened the scoring early, putting a rebound off the Royal's keeper into the back of the net at the 6:36 mark. Warner began to swing the momentum back in their favor toward the middle stages of the first half and at 22:21, Larissa Campelo netted a shot from the top of the box off a feed from Ashley Cole. The Lady Gyrenes would have an answer just 6 minutes later as Alexia Mazzaccone sent a right to left cross shot past the keeper from Laura Mastandrea, making it 2-1 heading into the half.

The second half became a physical battle between the two teams as they fought for possession and momentum throughout. Alexia Mazzaccone padded the lead for the Blue and Green, scoring her second goal of the day by driving home a penalty kick 5 minutes in. The Ave Maria defense stood tall the rest of the way, not allowing Warner back onto the score sheet. The score would hold at 3-1 for a final as Francesca Singleton stopped 7 of 8 shots on goal on the day.

The Lady Gyrenes will be back in action this Saturday afternoon when they host Johnson University at 3 p.m.
