Lady Gyrenes Cruise Past Trinity College In Three

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team didn't commit an attack error in the first set and hit .425 for the match en route to a straight set win against the visiting Tigers of Trinity College on Friday night. The win is the second in a row for Ave Maria who moves to 5-5 on the season.

In the attack, Lexy Smith led AMU with 16 kills followed by nine from Hannah Wurster and seven from Libby Welsh. Welsh also finished with a pair of blocks. Lauren Ruby tallied 36 assists in the win while Lexie Andric (13) and Monique Rivers (10) each finished with double-digit digs.

Ave Maria took nine straight points and won 11 of the first 12 points of the first set en route to a 25-14 win. After Trinity ran off eight straight to close the gap to 12-9, Ave Maria scored three straight points to regain some of its cushion. Leading 20-14, the Blue and Green won the final five points to take the set.

In the second set, a pair of five-point runs by AMU gave the Lady Gyrenes an 18-9 lead midway through the set. Trinity wouldn't go away however, and tallied to pull within four, 22-18. AMU won three of the final four points to take the set 25-19

The Blue and Green again came out firing in the third and jumped out to an 11-6 lead. AMU was able to build on that lead and then went on a four-point run to take a 23-14 advantage. AMU went on to win the set 25-15.

As a team, AMU finished with 46 kills compared to 25 by Trinity and the Lady Gyrenes finished with nine more digs, 41-32.
