The Ave Maria University men's basketball team fell victim to the torrid shooting of the visiting Thomas University Night Hawks, dropping the Sun Conference contest 84-58 on Saturday at the Tom Golisano Field House. Thomas made seven of their 13 three-point attempts, and their field goal percentage sat above 50% for the majority of the game before finishing at 48.4%.
Saturday's game got off to a promising start for the Gyrenes, as the hosts held an 18-15 advantage just over nine minutes into the game. Unfortunately for AMU, the Night Hawks proceeded to go on a 24-4 run over the next six minutes. The Thomas lead was 17 points at halftime, 51-34.
The second half also saw a solid start from the Gyrenes, with a 12-6 spurt in the first five minutes cutting Thomas' lead to 11 points. That would be as close as the game would get. Thomas put the game away with an 18-3 run spanning the following seven minutes.
Tejai Allen was the brightest spot for the Gyrenes in the losing effort. The junior scored 20 points on 10-of-17 shooting, and finished just one rebound shy of a double-double. Deonte Dixon was the only other Gyrene in double figures, scoring 10 points.
Four Night Hawks were in double figures, led by 25 points from Katrell Myers, who was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field. Willie Holloway posted a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Javoris Cooks and Tre' Ford scored 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Ave Maria heads back on the road this week, taking on conference opponent St. Thomas University on Thursday night. The Gyrenes return home next Saturdayfor a crucial contest with Webber International University at the Tom Golisano Field House.
