Larson Ties AMU Saves Record in Loss

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team lost a 7-0 conference match on Wednesday afternoon to St. Thomas University, a match that saw AMU freshman goalie Erica Larson tie a school record with 21 saves.

Larson tied a school record that had stood alone since September 28, 2013, when Francesca Singleton stopped 21 shots against Northwood. The freshman saved 13 shots in the first half and eight more in the final 45 minutes to etch her name in the school record book. Larson's final save, which tied the school record, came in the 89th minute on a strike from Kylie Braeseke.

It was Larson's fifth ten-save performance of the season, and moved her into fourth in the nation in saves per game with 11.11. She also became the ninth goalie in the nation at the NAIA level to amass 100 saves this season, and the only one to have played fewer than ten matches.

The visiting Bobcats jumped out to a lead in the third minute on a goal from Jannel Johnson. Johnson also scored in the 22nd, between goals from Sarah Lyppert Thomsson and Andrea Manzur that accounted for St. Thomas four-goal first half.

St. Thomas' three goals in the second half were accounted for by Alexa Rivera, Eva Castano Candela, and Lisa Wallje. For the game, St. Thomas outshot Ave Maria 50-3, including a 28-1 edge in shots on goal.

Two of Ave Maria's three shots, including the lone shot on goal, was taken by Alexia Mazzoccone, while the other Gyrene shot was launched by Lauren Campoe.

The Gyrenes are on the road this weekend, travelling north to Bluffton, South Carolina for a Sun Conference match with USCB. The final two AMU home games of the season are next week, with games Wednesday against Florida Memorial and Saturday against SCAD-Savannah wrapping up the home slate.
