SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team came up just short on Saturday afternoon, losing 4-3 in overtime to the Bees of Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah. Ave Maria led 3-2 with just over ten minutes to play, but surrendered the final two goals of the match.
The Gyrenes, who did not trail in the match until SCAD's game-winner in overtime, scored the opening goal in the 15th minute of the match. Juan Carlos Bucaram found the back of the net without the aid of an assist to give AMU a 1-0 lead. SCAD answered in the 28th minute on a penalty kick from Arthur Bello Vega.
Kensley Jean Baptiste gave the lead back to Ave Maria in the 35th minute. On an assist from Raphael Rodriguez, Jean Baptiste scored his eighth goal of the season, the fourth most in school history. Jean Baptiste's 17 points this season also rank fourth in single-season school history.
The match was again tied in the 54th minute. Bello Viega added an assist to his goal, finding Cian Lynch for the equalizer. SCAD nearly took the lead in the 62nd minute, when Bello Viega was awarded a penalty kick. His kick was saved by Ave's Andrea Salomone, one of his five saves on the day.
Bucaram moved Ave Maria back in front in the 68th minute, giving the Gyrenes a 3-2 lead with just under 23 minutes to play. Bucaram delivered on a cross from Rodriguez, heading it into the back of the net for his second goal of the match.
SCAD was able to even the match in the 81st minute, thanks to Bello Viega's second goal of the match. The Bees then won the match in the 94th minute, when Lynch scored his second goal, with assists given to Alejandro Rodriguez and Alfie Raw.
Saturday's match concluded the road portion of the schedule for the Gyrenes, who play at home twice next week to end the season. The first match comes Wednesday afternoon, when the Gyrenes host the Seahawks of Keiser University. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at the AMU Soccer Field.
