AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team completed their home schedule on Saturday afternoon against the Bees of Savannah College of Art and Design. SCAD-Savannah toppled the Gyrenes 6-0 in the Sun Conference matchup.
Before the match, the Gyrenes honored the four senior members of the team. Gianna Vega, Laura Mastandrea, Alexia Mazzoccone, and Rebekah Sperry celebrated their collegiate careers playing for the Blue and Green.
SCAD scored their three first half goals in a span of less than eight minutes. After nearly half an hour of scoreless action, Maddy Lambert got the Bees on the board, finishing a corner kick from Emily Cook into the back of the net. Lambert scored again in the 34th minute, this time on an assist from Mackayla Dean. The stretch was capped off in the 38th minute, when Nikki Abel scored on an assist from Briana Hunter.
The Bees wasted no time scoring in the second half, increasing their lead to 4-0 just 17 seconds into the frame. Annie Sullivan scored an unassisted goal, which was followed in the second half by goals from Lindsay Crawley in the 53rd minute and Hope Kemp-Hanson in the 67th minute.
Ave Maria took three shots on goal in their final home match of the season. The strikes were provided by Lauren Campoe, Mastandrea, and Mazzoccone. Mazzoccone also was the lone Gyrene to record two total shots. In net, Erica Larson made five saves to move within six saves of AMU's single-season record, a record she will have an opportunity to break away from home.
AMU's season concludes next week with a pair of matches away from Ave Maria. On Monday, the Gyrenes battle NCAA Division II opponent Lynn University in Boca Raton. The season then concludes on Saturday in Lakeland against the Fire of Southeastern University.
