Larson Breaks AMU Single-Season Saves Record at Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team played their final non-conference match of the season on Monday night, and saw some school history made in a 10-1 loss to the Fighting Knights of Lynn University, a member of the Sunshine State Conference in NCAA's Division II.

Freshman goalkeeper Erica Larson became Ave Maria's single-season saves leader with 15 saves in the match. Her effort boosted her season total to 143 saves, breaking the Ave Maria record set in 2013 by Francesca Singleton. The freshman is the first goalie in The Sun Conference to amass 140 saves in a season since 2012.

In Monday's match, Lynn scored the first two goals of the match within the opening seven minutes. Donish Henry-Cole scored 40 seconds into the contest, while Valentina Pedretti found the back of the net in the seventh minute.

Alexia Mazzoccone pulled the Gyrenes within one goal in the 16th minute with the 18th goal of her AMU career. The senior buried a pass from Meghan Precord for her fifth goal of the season. Mazzoccone enters the final game of the season one goal short of tying the school record for goals in a career.

Lynn scored three more goals in the first half, and took a 5-1 lead into the halftime break. The Knights then scored five goals in the final 45 minutes, including a tally from Natalie Turok just 33 seconds into the half. In total, Henry-Cole, Pedretti, and Turok each scored two goals in the match.

Ave Maria was outshot 42-4 by the Division II Knights. The three shots on goal for the Gyrenes were provided by Mazzoccone, Ally Williams, and Lauren Campoe.

The 2017 season comes to an end for the Gyrenes on Saturday evening on the road, when AMU travels to Lakeland for a meeting with the Southeastern University Fire. Southeastern enters the match ranked among the top 15 teams in the nation. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
