BABSON PARK, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team was outshot 22-7 by Webber International on Wednesday afternoon, and suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Warriors in Babson Park.
Webber scored each of the first three goals in the match, beginning in the 22nd minute. Madison Pike opened the scoring on an assist from Amanda Cypriano to put Webber International ahead. Just under eight minutes later, the Warriors added to the lead with a goal from Laura Borders. Borders' 30th minute goal came on an assist from Isabella Aviolla.
The Warriors made the score 3-0 in the 68th minute, when Angelina Conde found the back of the net. Lauren Caffee assisted on what would prove to be the final goal of the match for the hosts.
Ave Maria avoided the shutout in the 80th minute, thanks to freshman Lauren Campoe. The freshman midfielder scored the first goal of her collegiate career to get the Gyrenes on the board, and provide the final margin of 3-1.
Erica Larson added nine saves to her season total, keeping her in the top-20 in the nation in saves per match. Her counterpart, Sarah McKinney saved four of the five shots on goal she faced. Of those five shots, Meghan Precord provided two, while Campoe, Laura Mastandrea and Alexia Mazzoccone logged the others.
Next on the schedule for the Gyrenes is a home match with the Warner University Royals. The conference tilt at AMU Soccer Field is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
