Miami, FL -- The Ave Maria University baseball team held the lead after three innings, but fell 10-2 to the Barry University Buccaneers on Tuesday night in Miami. Barry scored eight runs in the middle three frames to pull away from the Gyrenes in the midweek contest.
Â
The Gyrenes scored in each of the first two innings, plating the game's opening run in the top of the first in powerful fashion. After a leadoff flyout, Ryan Cook ended a nine-pitch at bat with a home run to left field. Cook's homer was the only Gyrene strike in an otherwise quiet inning.
Â
Barry responded in the bottom of the first, and did not need a hit to do so. Lamazares drew a one-out walk, and moved to third base on a pair of wild pitches. With two outs, a grounder off the bat of Ramos was misplayed, allowing the tying run to score.
Â
AMU reclaimed the lead in the top of the second inning. The Gyrenes loaded the bases with two outs on a Nick Wydler hit by pitch, a Tully Allen single, and a Miles Stevens hit by pitch. Ave took a 2-1 lead when Justin Hartshorne drew a six-pitch walk, forcing in Wydler.
Â
Barry's surge began with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Rapoza drove in the game-tying run with a double, and Escarra followed with the go-ahead single down the right field line. Rapoza's double drove in Denson, who had singled with one out.
Â
The Buccaneers widened the lead with two more runs in the fifth. Barry worked the bases loaded with no outs, doing so on two singles and a hit batsmen. Denson drove in the first run with a fielder's choice that saw a runner retired at second. The lead became 5-2 on an RBI groundout to second by Rapoza.
Â
Four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning put the game away for the Buccaneers. Again, Barry found the bases loaded after a walk, a catcher's interference, and a hit batsmen. Baldwin drove in a run on a groundout to second, and Ramos plated two more when he doubled down the left field line. A Denson single completed the inning's scoring.
Barry scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a Baldwin double.
Â
Ave Maria's three hits in the losing effort were supplied by Cook, Allen, and Stevens. Zack Rose took the loss for the Gyrenes, while Barry's Armando Gonzalez went down as the winner.
Â
AMU returns to conference play Friday afternoon, as the Gyrenes return to the east coast for a series with the Keiser University Seahawks.
