AVE MARIA, Fla. --- Playing at home for the first time in over a month, the Lady Gyrenes were able to come away with a win against USCB, 5-4, in nine innings. It was the conference opener for both teams. AMU improves to 14-6 overall and to 1-0 in Sun Conference play.
 
The Lady Gyrenes quickly put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. With Marinna Shadley and Sadie Mosher on base, Alyssa Colding singled just past the outreached arm of the second baseman but the center fielder fell when making a play for the ball allowing all three players to score
 
Following the three-run first, the Lady Gyrene offense was held quite which allowed USCB to chip away at the AMU lead with a run in the third and two in the sixth to tie the game.
 
In the first extra inning, USCB scored on an RBI single to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Deanna Stirtzinger drove in Pookie Del Pino with a RBI single to send the game to the ninth. In the ninth, Colding hit a walk-off sacrifice fly with the bases loaded that allowed Kalie Romig to score the go-ahead run.
 
Shadley and Colding each had multiple hits on the day for AMU. Colding finished with three RBI.
 
Mosher picked up the win in the circle for the Blue and Green to improve to 6-2 on the season. She pitched all nine innings of the series opener and allowed four runs, two earned. She allowed 10 hits and struck out three. She didn't allow a walk.
 
USCB's Abby Pac pitched the entire game for the Sand Sharks and allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks. She struck out nine and hit four batters.
 
The two teams conclude their three-game set with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
