Softball Holds Off Webber 3-2

BABSON PARK, Fla. --- The Ave Maria University softball team kept rolling on Friday evening, using an early surge to grab a 3-2 victory over Webber International University. The Lady Gyrenes, who received votes in the most recent NAIA coaches' poll, are now 9-4 in Sun Conference play, and are winners of eight of their last nine games.

It didn't take the Gyrenes long to claim the lead, scoring a run in the opening inning of the contest. Kalie Romig singled down the left field line, and was moved to second via a bunt by Marinna Shadley.
Romig then advanced to third and then scored on a wild pitch to put the Gyrenes on the board.

Sadie Mosher, who was also Ave's starting pitcher, helped herself in the top of the third. With two outs, Shadley extended the inning with a double to left field. Mosher then stepped up and drilled a two-run homer to give the Gyrenes a 3-0 lead.

Webber got a run back in the bottom of the third, and added another in the fourth to pull within a run. In the third inning, Brandi Hazen hit a two-out single to score Cassidy Roberts and put the Warriors on the board. The next inning, Laura Borders hit a solo shot with one out in the frame to trim the Gyrene lead to 3-2.

From there, Mosher was able to keep the Warriors off the board to preserve Ave Maria's conference triumph. Webber was able to put two runners on in the seventh, but AMU was able to induce a flyout to put the game away. Mosher, the two-time Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week, struck out eight Warrior hitters over her complete game. Mosher also added two of Ave Maria's six hits in the win. Romig was the other Gyrene to post two hits.

In the midst of a conference championship hunt, the Gyrenes will play two in Babson Park on Saturday against the Warriors. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am at Webber, with the nightcap scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
