Highlight Video

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team played Thomas University to a scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon at AMU Soccer Field. The Gyrenes withstood 20 shots from the visiting Night Hawks, who were picked to win The Sun Conference in the preseason coaches' poll. The tie was the first point earned in conference play by the Gyrenes since a win over Johnson and Wales in 2012.

Ave Maria kept the game scoreless for 110 minutes despite being outshot 20-7, including 11-4 in shots on goal. Andrea Salomone put together his best game of the season in net, recording a season-high 11 saves. On numerous occasions, the Gyrene defense was able to stymie a scoring opportunity for the Night Hawks.

Salomone's counterpart, Ben Barnes, saved all four Ave Maria shots.

Of the four shots on goal taken by the Gyrenes, two were kicked by Kensley Jean Baptiste, while Alejandro Echeverria and Juan Carlos Bucaram each added one shot.

After 90 minutes of scoreless play and nearly two full overtime periods, Thomas had one final chance to win on a free kick with seven seconds left, but AMU was able to clear the cross and preserve the draw.

The game was hotly contested between the two sides, as each team accumulated three yellow cards during Saturday's action.

The Gyrenes return to the field on Wednesday, heading on the road for a meeting with Johnson and Wales University. Kickoff with the Wildcats is scheduled for noon in North Miami, and is the first of two road games next week for Ave Maria.
