NORTH MIAMI, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team suffered a road setback on Wednesday afternoon, losing 5-1 to Johnson and Wales University in North Miami. The Wildcats scored the first three goals to take a lead they would not relinquish against the Gyrenes.
Patricio Rolon scored the first two goals of the match 31 seconds apart in the 15th and 16th minutes. Rolon scored the opening goal on a free kick, and added a second tally on a feed into the penalty box from Youri Derine. The host Wildcats then made it 3-0 in the 25th minute on a header from Greg McDoom on an assist from Brian Vidaleas.
Ave Maria got on the board just over ten minutes into the second half, thanks to freshman Kensley Jean Baptiste. With an assist from Oscar Alcivar, the Immokalee native found the back of the net for the fourth time this season to get the Gyrenes back within two at 3-1.
Johnson and Wales put the match away in the final 25 of the contest, scoring on goals from Jonas Bukh and Franco Molina. The goals came on assists by Arthur Mesquita and Rolon, respecitvely.
Andrea Salomone made seven saves in net for the Gyrenes, keeping JWU from extending their lead any further in the first half. John Turner played the final 45 minutes in net for AMU.
Juan Carlos Bucaram was the most active Gyrene offensively, launching five shots and putting two on goal. Jean Baptiste and John Gokey each added two shots in the losing effort.
The Gyrenes take a break from Sun Conference play this weekend with a road match against Florida College. The non-conference tilt is scheduled for noon in Temple Terrace. Ave's next conference match, and next home match, is October 4 against Webber International.
