Lady Gyrenes Edge Warner in Lake Wales

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's basketball team held Warner University to a 27.5 field goal percentage, and won their second straight Sun Conference game, 50-43 over the Royals in Lake Wales. The win sealed a regular season sweep of the Gyrenes' in-state rivals.

Ave Maria continued their momentum from Thursday night's comeback into the first quarter on Saturday, jumping out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter. The frame was marked by a 16-4 run from the Gyrenes, turning a 5-5 tie after 3:14 into a 12-point lead at the end of the first. Sarah Miller played a big role in the run, scoring five points with two rebounds and an assist.

The Royals chipped back into the contest with a late run in the second quarter. Following jumpers from Mallory Burton and Miller, the Gyrenes led by 12 with 3:46 left in the half. From there, Warner scored six unanswered points on three Jasmine Celestin free throws and an I'munique Green three-pointer to close AMU's lead to 30-24 at halftime.

AMU kept the lead for the entirety of the third quarter, and led by as many as 11 points in the first two minutes of the frame. Another Warner run helped the Royals stay within striking distance, as the hosts scored five of the quarter's final seven points and trailed 40-35 after three quarters.

Warner then allowed just one Gyrene point in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, and tied the game at 41 with 2:49 to play. The Gyrenes took the lead back for good on a Jasmine Bateman free throw. Miller made it 44-41 after a putback on a Bateman missed free throw. Ave Maria sealed the win with six more free throws -,two from Lauren Gillingham, two from Miller, one from Burton, and one from Amanda Kasprzak.

Miller was Ave Maria's leading scorer and rebounder, recording 13 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Burton followed with 12 points, and Gillingham chipped in ten. For Warner, Celestin was the only Royal in double figures with 19 points.

The Gyrenes take a break from Sun Conference play on Tuesday, battling Florida College in Temple Terrace. It is the second meeting of the season between AMU and Florida College, with the Gyrenes earning a 79-44 victory back on October 28.
