Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker In Five Sets

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team had St. Thomas on the brink in the fourth set before the Bobcats rallied in the fourth and topped AMU in the fifth set on Wednesday night. It was the third time this season Ave Maria had gone to a fifth set and the first they hadn't come out with a win.
 
St. Thomas won the opening set 25-22 before the Gyrenes took the second and third sets, 25-22 and 25-20, respectively. Ave Maria hit above .120 in the first three sets.
 
Both teams struggled to find their swing in the fourth set with a combined 22 errors in the frame. Ave Maria took the early advantage in the set with an 8-4 lead before St. Thomas came back to tie the match at 11. Seven of the next eight points went to the Gyrenes in the middle of the set gave AMU a 19-14 lead.
 
After a Bobcat run tied the match at 19, AMU strung together three straight points to take a 22-19 edge. With the Gyrenes leading 23-20, St. Thomas won the final five points to force a fifth and deciding set.
 
In the fifth set, St. Thomas hit .429 with 11 kills and two errors. With Ave Maria trailing 8-6, the Bobcats scored seven of the final eight points to win the match 15-7.
 
Kaedi Gillman led AMU with 10 kills and 10 digs. She also had two block assists. Lauren Ruby had 20 assists and 17 digs. Cassie Davis also had a double-double with 14 assists and 14 digs. Daniela Jaramillo tallied a team-best 26 digs.  
 
The Gyrenes return to action on Friday when they take on Keiser in West Palm Beach, Fla. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
