Women's Soccer Drops Road Match to SCAD

HARDEEVILLE, S.C.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team played their final road match of the season on Saturday evening, falling 3-1 to the Bees of SCAD-Savannah. SCAD pulled away from the Gyrenes with two goals in the final 20 minutes after AMU had evened the match earlier in the second half.

After nearly 40 minutes of scoreless play, the Bees struck for the go-ahead goal in the 43rd minute. Junior Hannah Amidon scored her first goal of the season with under three minutes to play in the first half, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead. Despite being outshot 15-1 in the opening 45 minutes, the Gyrenes surrendered just the one goal and went into halftime down 1-0.

The Gyrenes found the equalizer in the 66th minute. Freshman midfielder Sarah Dalton scored for the second time this season, beating the SCAD goalkeeper to even the match at one. Dalton's goal came on just her third shot of the season, and made her one of seven Gyrenes with two goals this season.

SCAD-Savannah answered Ave Maria's goal with two of their own to seal the win. In the 72nd minute, Amidon scored her second goal of the match on an assist from Rebecca Watson. 105 seconds later, Savannah Raines scored for the Bees, putting a shot in the back of the net on a rebound. The goal in the 74th minute provided the final 3-1 tally in favor of the host Bees.

The Bees outshot the Gyrenes 25-8 in the contest, and put nine of their shots on goal to four for the Gyrenes. In addition to Dalton's goal, Meghan Precord logged two shots on goal while Hannah Lawrence attempted the other. Molly Jensen stopped six of SCAD's nine shots on goal, making her first start in net in two weeks.

Ave Maria will conclude the 2018 season next Saturday against No. 3 Southeastern at Gyrene Field. Southeastern will enter the game seeking at least a share of The Sun Conference championship, as the Fire currently sit 6-0-1 in conference play. Kickoff in Ave Maria is scheduled for 11 a.m.
