Jean Baptiste Leads AMU to Conference Win

BABSON PARK, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team earned their first ever victory over Webber International University on Wednesday afternoon, claiming a 4-2 road win over the Warriors. The Gyrenes had not defeated Webber in eleven tries, dating back to the 2009 season.

The Gyrenes roared out to a 4-0 lead in the first half, powered by a historic performance from sophomore Kensley Jean Baptiste. The Immokalee native started his day in the 17th minute, when a yellow card from Webber allowed him to bury a penalty kick for his eighth goal of the season. Jean Baptiste struck again in the 24th minute, when the rebound on a blocked shot fell right to the forward, who finished it off to give the Gyrenes a 2-0 edge.

Jean Baptiste switched to facilitating for the rest of the first half, adding two assists to make him the school's leader in assists for both a single season and a career. In the 37th minute, John Gokey scored on an assist from Jean Baptiste, and Kevin Schein added a goal of his own in the 44th minute.

Webber International attempted to rally in the final 47 minutes of the match, starting in the 44th minute on a goal from Mateo Sassoni, which was assisted by Baxter Smith and MacKinley Burns. The Warriors added two second half goals within one minute of each other, as Sassoni scored againin the 70th minute, and Burns headed a ball into the net just 60 seconds later.

Ave Maria was able to keep the Warriors off the board for the remainder of the match to preserve the 4-3 victory, the Gyrenes' sixth triumph of the season. The Gyrenes won despite being outshot 18-16, with goalkeeper Andrea Salomone making four crucial saves.

The Gyrenes are at home on each of the next two Saturdays to finish their slate this season at Gyrene Field. Ave Maria hosts Warner this Saturday in a crucial conference matchup, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
