AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team made their first game under the lights a memorable one, as the Gyrenes netted a 4-2 victory over the Warriors of Webber International University. The victory snapped a 14-match winless streak in conference, and was Ave Maria's third win over Webber in the last four seasons.
The Gyrenes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, taking the lead in the sixth minute. Just under six minutes into the match, Maria Liguori launched a rocket from 30 yards out that sailed over the WIU goalkeeper for her first career goal. In the 18th minute, AMU got an opportunity from the spot after a Webber handball in the penalty kick. Emily Dalton was trusted with the penalty kick, and validated that trust by burying the shot in the back of the net, which also accounted for her first AMU goal.
Ave Maria's 3-0 lead was completed in the 37th minute, as a third Gyrene scored the first goal of their career. Jessica Martinez fired a shot that beat the Webber goalkeeper on an inadvertant deflection. Webber got back within two in the 42nd minute, when Megan Warner scored to cut the AMU lead to 3-1.
Webber scored again in the 61st minute, as a cross from Leah Borders found the foot of Luiza Oliveira, who beat the AMU goalkeeper to trim the Gyrene lead to 3-2.
After a penalty kick opportunity missed the mark in the 84th minute, the Gyrenes put the match away in the 86th. Meghan Precord blasted a free kick off the cross bar, but the rebound fell straight to the foot of Sarah McBride, who scored her second goal of the season to seal the match for Ave Maria.
The game was hotly contested between the two sides, with 38 shots attempted - 20 for the Warriors and 18 for the Gyrenes. Eight yellow cards were handed out, with each team receiving four cautions. Dalton and McBride combined for nine of Ave Maria's 18 shots, while Molly Jensen stopped nine Warrior shots to earn the win in net.
Both of Ave Maria's next two matches are on the road, as the Gyrenes will face Warner on Saturday and St. Thomas on October 13. The Gyrenes will return to Gyrene Field on October 13 for their penultimate home game of the season, a matchup with USCB. The game, which is the opener of a soccer doubleheader, is scheduled for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
