AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's basketball team moved to 9-1 on the season and 3-0 in Sun Conference play with a 73-62 victory over Keiser University Thursday evening at the Tom Golisano Field House. AMU's fourth win in a row came in the Sun Conference Game of the Week.
The first quarter saw the two teams trade the lead numerous times, with the advantage for either team eclipsing three points only once. The Seahawks led by four points after a three-pointer from Antigonie Sanabria with 37 seconds remaining, but a response from Emily Acosta with six seconds got AMU within one, 16-15 after ten minutes. Sarah Miller pulled down ten rebounds in the first quarter alone, including four on the offensive glass.
Ave Maria took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Seahawks 27-13. The second quarter included a 20-2 AMU run that turned a three-point Seahawk lead into a 15-point edge for Ave Maria. That run included two seperate 10-0 surges that allowed the Gyrenes to take a lead they would not relinquish. At halftime, AMU held a 42-29 lead over the visiting Seahawks, led by eleven first half points from Miller and eight points off the bench from Emily Acosta.
Keiser was able to cut into the Gyrene lead in the third quarter, trimming the AMU edge down to five with 2:28 to play in the frame. The Seahawks outscored Ave Maria 21-14 in the third, and trailed by just six, 56-50, as the fourth quarter got underway.
The Seahawks scored first in the fourth quarter to come within four points with 9:27 to play, but were not able to get any closer. The Gyrenes recorded the final five points of the game, all on free throws, to seal the eleven-point win in conference play. All five points were scored by Macarena Corral, who was one of four Gyrenes to score eight points in the winning effort.
Miller continued her torrid start to the 2018-19 season, leading the Gyrenes with 17 points and 21 rebounds. The only other Gyrene in double figures was Danielle Weinmann, who added 17 points of her own. Corral, Acosta, Amanda Kasprzak, and Taylor Allen all scored eight points, while Keiser was led by 19 points and eleven rebounds from Midori Long.Â
AMU is one of three teams in the conference with an undefeated record, joining No. 3 Southeastern and Florida Memorial at the top of the standings. The first place Gyrenes return to action in North Miami on Saturday afternoon against Johnson and Wales University. Tipoff against the Wildcats is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., and is the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader.
