NORTH MIAMI, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team improved to 4-0 in Sun Conference play and to 10-1 on the season on Saturday with a 61-52 win at Johnson & Wales.
Sarah Miller and Danielle Weinmann each finished with double-doubles for the Gyrenes. Miller had 20 points and 13 rebounds while Weinmann tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals.
Despite shooting 34 percent from the field in the first half, the Gyrenes' shut down defense led them to a 33-17 lead at the break. They limited Johnson & Wales to 25 percent shooting. Both team made one three in the opening 20 minutes.
Trailing by one midway through the first quarter, the Gyrenes went on a 12-2 run over the final 5:52 of the quarter to take a 16-7 lead. AMU continued their run into the second quarter by scoring the frames first six points to take a 22-7 advantage. The Gyrenes led by as many as 19 in the opening 20 minutes and by 16 at the half.
The Blue and Green continued to lead by double-digits for most of the second half. AMU matched their largest lead of the game, 19, with 7:27 remaining in the fourth on a Sarah Miller lay-up and one. Johnson & Wales rallied late to cut their deficit to seven with 1:54 to play. The Gyrenes went on to win by nine, 61-52.
Ave Maria outscored the Wildcats 19-11 in points off turnovers and 40-30 in points in the paint.
The Gyrenes return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Kissimmee, Fla., to take on Johnson University. The game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. as part of a men's and women's basketball double-header.
