KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The Ave Maria men's basketball team was upset at Johnson University on Tuesday night, 78-77. Johnson made one of two free throws in the final seconds to seal the win for the Suns.
Ave Maria was up 22-12 early only to see Johnson come back to tie the game at 25. While the Gyrenes played with the lead for a majority of the game, they weren't able to put away the Suns. Johnson tied the game several times before taking the lead, 55-54, with about 12 minutes to play.
Trailing by three, Gianpaolo Riccio and Caelen Watts hits back-to-back threes to give the Blue and Green a three point lead a few minutes to play. Greenan Sullivan increased the lead to five with a jumper on the next possession.
Johnson chipped away and tied the game with a couple minutes to play at 70-all and seemed to have an answer for each AMU score. After an jumper and-one by Leo Behrend, Johnson made a three on the other end to tie the game at 75. With Johnson up 77-75, Behrend was fouled on an inbound pass and made both free throws to tie the game.
In the final seconds, Johnson's Anthony Young drove and was fouled with 2.6 seconds remaining. After missing the first of the his free throws, he made the second to put the Suns in front by one. AMU was unable to get a shot up in the last second to fall 78-77.
Behrend finished with a team-best 20 points. Riccio added 18 while Jovan Grujicic and Watts each finished with 10 points. AMU was outrebounded 37-20.
The Gyrenes return to the court on Thursday when they travel to Lakeland to take on Southeastern.
